Teens Out Of School — What Now?

by Ali @ iBlogPlanet on June 11, 2009

After reading only the title of this post, some may feel this is a bit off topic from the main topic of this blogfinance, but I beg to differ. After reading this, I’m sure you’ll see it has a lot to do with finance. Remember — never judge a book by its cover ;)

So, most teenagers are out of school today, as far as I know. With such a horrible economy here in the USA, what are a lot of these teenagers going to do? I have a feeling that this summer is going to cost the United States a lot of financial problems — or put short, a lot of money. Why? Well, there are less jobs available, needless to say. In the past, many teenagers spent their summers balancing between some work, “partying”, hanging out with friends, and so on. But, as of now, with such little job availablity, it would be fair to cross of working from that list. If you’re with me till now, you can probably figure out what this means — more teens partying. How is this going to hurt our economy and financial situation in the USA? Simple; teenagers partying often leads to trouble, and trouble leads to law enforcement becoming involved. When law enforcement gets involved, our tax money is going towards those going into the juvenile system, or “juvie”, or for those commiting serious crimes, adult detention centers/prisons.

I, by no means, am trying to be a pessismist, but let’s face it — teenagers seem to get in more and more trouble as the years go on. Why? More availability to drugs, alcohol (even though it’s technically a drug), and even weapons. This all leads to one thing; disaster. And disaster leads to another thing; money.

Do not get scared though — there are ways to avoid this potential disastrous outcome. Parents; try your best to keep your kids busy, with activities that are safe and controlled. Now, realistically, no parent is going to send their teenager to a camp — and no teen will agree to that. But, set ground rules — be sure they are in control, cause ultimately, their actions could cost YOU money (on top of the horrible thought of realizing your teenager has landed themself in trouble). Keep your teenagers busy, tell them to be safe, and tell them to think of the long term effects of their actions. Their actions will not only affect them, but moreover effect the USA as a whole.

So long for now, and everyone have a safe summer!
