The Pain Of Changing Domains

I made a big mistake, which is stressing me out a lot now. Below is what I did from step 1.

1) I transferred all the posts from FinanceAdvisoryStop.com to iBlogPlanet

2) I deleted all the posts from FinanceAdvisoryStop.com (big mistake).

3) In transferring to iBlogPlanet.com, the permalink structure of all the posts changed.

4) I did a 301 Redirect, but FinanceAdvisoryStop.com/article1 redirects to iBlogPlanet.com

I believe I lost a lot of link juice because of this. I wish I had known better, then again, it was my first time changing domains.

If anybody thinks they have a solution to the problem I’m facing, please let me know.

    Hi,

I don’t know if you got the e-mail I sent to you, I just replied to the email I got from your old site about new comments being added, but it went to your old domain. It’s probably too late now, but nevertheless, I intended for you to receive it, so might as well post it here:

    ———

Since I can’t reply to you in the comments because I just get a “page not found” on your old site – I will just send it to you here :)

I’m not 100% sure whether or not you will be penalized by google if you *remove* your articles from advisory stop. I seriously doubt it. BUT – you’re not going to wanna do that… because what will happen is, just like it happend to me now, people will click old links to your articles and they end up at ….. nothing!

I actually also moved my blog about a month ago, but I had a very little amount of posts on posts on the old site, so I just manually edited all my posts to redirect to their new url at techpatio.com, so I wouldn’t miss out on any visits. I’m sure there’s a wordpress plugin that will allow a “complete redirect” of all your posts to a new site, specially if you use the same permalink structure.

Otherwise somebody with basic knowledge of PHP will be able to make you a index.php file that simply redirects users to the new domain but keeps the permalink structure.

It’s just important to remember to set the response code to “301″ so spiders know that the content has moved for good. Otherwise they will think it’s temporary, and you don’t want that.

      Klaus,

I replied to your email. Let me know if you received it. If not, I’ll send it again! :)

Moving domains is definitely painful! I’m moving a niche blog to a better domain name (since I have learned a LOT over the past year), and I installed the free Redirection plugin by UrbanGiraffe.com on the old blog. I had to do it post by post, but I could tell it source link and destination link and it successfully redirects to the post on the new site when people click links to the old. I wouldn’t want to do that with hundreds of posts, but I had a few that were still getting lots of StumbleUpon traffic so they were worth it.

I’m sorry you deleted your old posts – maybe since you have a 301 redirecting the old site to the new one you could just make a terrific 404 page to direct people to the posts/categories they’re looking for…?

      Christie,

I agree — very painful. Glad to see changing domains is going a bit better for you! :P

Well, I think I remember the permalink structure on the old site was /%postname%/. I could export the posts from here, upload them on the old domain… But then what? What kind of redirection would I have to set up, given the URLs will be like this:

      http://www.iblogplanet.com/article1
      http://www.financeadvisorystop.com/article1

Is there a plugin I could then use to complete the process (given I successfully reupload the posts at the old domain)?

Yes, if you have WordPress, you can get the Redirection plugin. For each link to redirect, you type in the source (example http://www.financeadvisorystop.com/article1) and the destination (example http://www.financeadvisorystop.com/article1) It will take care of the 301 for you.

Thank you Christie! Looks like I’ll have to go through and do it for each post, but I only have 70 or some posts — shouldn’t take me long.

          Thanks once again :)

Ops, so sorry to hear that. How many backlinks probably your previous domain had? Don’t worry, backlinks can be built again, as long as all your blog post is safe. :)

    Take it easy okay dude?

    Regards,
    Lee

      Lee,

I had some 5000 backlinks. Sucks big time! :(

But I’m a better blogger now — I think I can reach that in no time.

5000 backlinks? I would definitely get somebody to make me a small php script to redirect, if it was me. Of course you can get 5000 backlinks too for this site, but 5000 is still a lot to miss out on….

      Klaus,

Yeah, I should probably do that. What I’ve done currently is this:

One of my posts on the old domain was financeadvisorystop.com/save-money-quitting-smoking-invest-your-health-instead/

If you trying going to that, it will redirect you to iblogplanet.com

      Is that fine?

Yeah, it is, but in the longrun, I think it’s for the better. I like your domain also — very catchy.
