Advertising Your Website The Smart Way

For those who have their own website and are trying to sell either a product or service, advertising is key. There are a number of methods of advertising, all effective in their own sense. You may be selling a money making EBook, or you may be selling SEO services. Either way, through advertising properly, you can bring in tons of traffic, increasing the chance of converting this traffic into customers/clients.

I’ve seen many website owners put lots of lots of money into researching their niches, analyzing who their customers are, and so on. Prior to doing so, you need to do a bit of work on your own (and it should not cost money). You need to decide what ways are the ideal for advertising your product or service.

Below are a few simple tips (no-brainers) that I hope will refresh your memory:

  • Know who your customers are
  • Make sure you are buying ad space on relevant sites
  • Try to avoid pop ups or emailing – customers find these annoying
  • Do not go for it in one shot – gradually grow your business

Obviously nothing new here, yet some tips that many businessmen overlook. Before you advertise your next product and/or service, keep the above in mind.

Short and informative article. I fully agree on third point. Pop-ups and spam emails really irritate a lot. Nice blog :)

I never advertise before but in my opinion we have to know our target customers to advertise =)

I seem to agree with Ruchi about pop ups and emails. I don’t hate it but it annoys me and I’m sure many others.

I have received a few advertisements on my site and they have almost paid for my years hosting fees. I created a advertising page with all my prices.

I would also suggest that users try different methods of generation income. Some things will work for you, but not others and vise versa.

This may be beside the point, so you can delete this comment later, but your last two articles are centered for some reason. I’m not sure if you are trying to do that or if that’s an error.

I agree with Ruchi and George, many people hate pop-up or emails, including myself, I hate it a lot as I found most of these things are useless. Anyway, I’ve not advertised my blog because I do like to do it for free myself such as social marketing or blog commenting, it could builds my brand naturally. I would use advertising if I have product to sell. :D

There are not non paid tips like make mail signatures, keep it in status of IM’s, do mail marketing…

  7. July 27, 2009 at 10:48 am #

    Lee,

I like to do the same. I don’t have the budget to spend money, so I try to do everything for free.

Aside from social marketing and blog commenting, how do you promote your blog?

  8. July 27, 2009 at 11:43 am #

All 4 are good points. As with the other commentors… I do not like pop-ups and have hardly ever clicked on any, but occasionally there might be one that is so cool I might check it out, but it has to be really unique.

Point 4 is also a big one. You need to grow your business as a nice manageable pace and make sure to reinvest a good chunk of your profits in things like marketing that will make you more money and keep doing that over and over again.

I agree with you Gooroo. What I hate above all is spammy mail and advertising pop-up… I’m not planning to advertise my site before long, I’m fine with my blog growth so far.

I hate the spam emails & pop up ads. However, there is a lot of potential in advertising as Gooroo has correctly stated. The most important aspect is to not appear as a salesperson to your niche. That’s what irritates readers the most. What do you think?

  11. July 27, 2009 at 10:44 am #

    Thank Ruchi,

I agree — popups especially. Nothing bugs me more than being attacked by popups!

  12. July 27, 2009 at 10:45 am #

    Blinkky,

That is true — advertising to a general audience is not going to work. If you are selling video games, you need to target males between 9 – 25.

If you’re selling makeup, you’re likely targeting women! :P

  13. July 27, 2009 at 10:46 am #

Yeah, I won’t immediately leave a site if it has popups, but it definitely leaves a bad impression on their part.

Yeah, I try to do the same — make at least enough to cover my years hosting. I wouldn’t want to have to say I blogged for a year, only to lose money.

    Jason,

Thanks for mentioning that. What browser are you using? They don’t appear centered on my browser.

Does anybody else have the same problem as Jason?

  15. July 27, 2009 at 10:49 am #

    Yeah,

Mail signatures are great. I use them myself. What IM program do you use? MSN?

  16. July 27, 2009 at 1:03 pm #

    Doug

You bring up a good point. People don’t avoid every single popup. If the popup seems convincing, and unique, people may click on it.

Yeah, point 4 is probably one of the most important of the group.

I’ve been wanting to ask you Doug (if you don’t mind), is your blog your only website? You seem like you really know what you’re doing, so I’m going to assume you have a few other websites. If so, let me know — I’d be glad to have a look at them!

  17. July 27, 2009 at 1:20 pm #

We actually own A LOT of websites, but most of them are in small niches that we like to keep to ourselves, as competition can really hurt. I hope you can understand :)

Here are a few that you can take a peek at that though.

http://www.MiraMesa.com – Community website for where I live
http://www.RoyaltyFreePackage.com – Royalty free music clips
http://www.HomeSchoolingGuidebook.com – Guide to help parents decide if homeschooling is right for their kids
http://www.PosterDiscounters.com – Read more about it in my latest post

That’s a few of the site we run :)

  18. July 27, 2009 at 1:31 pm #

Yeah, I understand Doug. Not a problem!

I’ll have a look at the ones you provided — thanks.

I’m considering joining the affiliate marketing scene, but I’m going to look for some good niches first. I think that is one of the hardest parts — finding a good niche. There is too much competition in a lot of niches.

    Benjamin,

Nothing worse than spammy mail and popups!

Yeah, your blog is coming along great. I won’t be advertising for a while either. I want it to grow gradually.
