I’m A “Senior”, So They Say

by Ali @ iBlogPlanet on August 25, 2009

bingonumber12 Im A Senior, So They SayAccording to my traffic stats, most of my readers are from the USA, so I think most can relate to this post. As of today, August 25th, 2009, I am a Senior in high school. I feel weird using the word because in Canada, we don’t refer to 12th graders as Seniors. We don’t really have a name for 12th Graders actually. There goes my Canadian side again. Technically, I won’t be a Senior till Wednesday, because the new school is not letting me begin until I get some medical work done, which is required by the County which my school is in. If you ever switched Counties during high school, you probably know how annoying it is. You literally have to drive from one doctors office, to another, to another…and to another. Anyways, enough rambling.

I’m pretty glad I’m going to be finishing High School. Before moving to Canada, I actually cherished every day of High School, and didn’t want it to end after only 4 years. But as I’ve mentioned many times before, moving in the middle of High School changed my whole outlook — let alone, moving to a school full of stuck up, rich kids (nothing against rich people in general). I know for a fact it would not have been that bad if I had moved within Canada, as I know people across Canada. I wouldn’t have minded moving to the East Coast either. I just think in parts of California, the wealth is not divided, making many of the cities full of snobby kids. Sorry if this is not the case, and I am totally wrong, but this is what I faced. Well, point is — I’m glad this is my last year of High School. I should be graduating with all my good friends, the ones I knew since childhood, but I guess that won’t be happening. That’s life though, right?

I don’t think being in the 12th grade is going to be much different than any other grade though, minus the fact that I can celebrate that I’m almost done. Now, I guess I should point out why my year is going to be more interesting than most other Seniors’ year. I will be graduating from high school a whole semester early — yup, a whole semester. So instead of finishing in June, I will be finishing in December — not to shabby if you ask me. How did I do that? Pretty simple actually — read on!

A week after moving to California, I realized this is definitely not a place I want to say (talk about quick to judge). With so much free time, I decided I would take some classes at a local Community College to get my credits sooner. I took two classes, including International Business, and Business Law. Not only did taking these two classes allow me to graduate early, but I feel they have really strengthened my college/university application. Oh, speaking of colleges and universities..actually, let’s not get side tracked. We’ll get to that later. So I took those closes, and here I am now — 4 months away from graduating high school. On top of graduating a semester early, I only have 2 classes a day in the 1st semester, compared to the regular 3 classes a day. Pretty sweat deal if you ask me!

I have to apply for University soon, being a Senior and all, right? I’ve done a bit of thinking as to where I would like to apply, and have come up with the following list. Keep in mind, when making the list below, I did not take into consideration the cost (we will also get to that after):

- McGill University (Montreal, Canada)

- University of Toronto (Toronto, Canada)

- San Jose State University (California, USA)

- Duke University (North Carolina, USA)

- New York University (New York, USA)

- UCLA (California, USA)

6a00c2252c11708e1d00ccff8ea4854064 500pi Im A Senior, So They SayYeah, yeah, I know the majority of these are very difficult to get into. Nonetheless, these are universities I’ve dreamed of going to since a young age, and stick by those dreams. May be difficult, but no one said impossible. As for cost, I’m not sure how financial aid works for Canadian Citizens in the USA, or how scholarships work either (if I’d have a good shot at any or not), but I will apply to a few of the above listed universities. I’d appreciate it if you’d make some suggestions in the comments section. I don’t expect you to make my decision for me, but a little help would be nice. For the record, I scored at 1700 on my SAT (first time, didn’t study for a second). Should I dig into the books, and take it one more time?

My older friends told me that “Senior” year was stressful, but I really didn’t listen to them. I should have, cause they were more than right. I haven’t even been to school as a Senior yet, and I’m stressing about university, money, and what not. There’s my ramble for the day. Maybe it’s a good post for some of my readers to reminisce on their high school days.

PS. Since I talked about university and such, a quick question. Would my blog (or other websites that I’ve managed) be worth mentioning on my college/university applications? In other words, is there any ways I can use them to give myself a boost in the college/university process?

Well, congratulations on almost finishing high school. It is a great achievement.

What do you plan on studying in college? Why dont you try Penn State or Columbia if you plan on studying business or economics? If not, either one of the two recommendations, I will vote for Duke.

Thanks Jason. I really like Business, and Law. So maybe something right in the middle — like Corporate Law.

Those are two great universities, but I’m not sure if I meet the requirements for them. Seeing as I lived in Canada the majority of my life (where school is not as competitive), I never really became involved in things such as Student Council, School Newspapers, etc.. — things that many of the people applying to schools like Penn State or Columbia do have. I think that would put me far behind..Let alone the cost of those universities.

Hi Ben .. good for you – now I see your Canadian. Congratulations on becoming a senior today!

Re your blog – yes .. I would bring it in .. I would also highlight, that you’re going to keep a record of life to help others of your age start out their Uni lives in the future. I’m quite sure you can find one or two angles that would back up your studies .. eg blogging legalities, apart from anything else .. Barbara has that link on her site: http://www.eff.org I think ..

Good luck with everything .. smart lad: I’d call you .. seeing opportunities all around you & good for George to tell us about you.

All the very best – Hilary Melton-Butcher

Thank you Hilary. After reading your comment, I am definitely going to mention it on my application. I think it should be an extra curricular activity that will give me a good boost…hopefully! :)

Will do! The only dilemma I’m facing right now is where to go to university — Canada or the USA?

So how was your first day at school? Did you meet anybody, and more importantly… are there a lot of hot girls there? That always makes going to a new school a little more enjoyable ;)

I hope you make the best out of your last year (well partial year) of high school.

Thanks Doug! I already knew quite a few people, so things are looking good. And oh, the girls…wow. I’ve never seen so many hot girls in one place, hahaha. ;)

I also found out I will not be able to finish early at this new school. They were not able to give me the same schedule that my last school was giving me. Drawback of moving! No worries though — hopefully the year will fly by.

Congratulations! Looks like you do enjoy school, eh? The way you express yourself in this area, I got a feeling that you’re gonna have a really good time ahead of you. And not a lot of kids like you get to have and maintain a successful blog like you’re doing now.

Like Hilary, I agree that you keep a blog record of your experiences, both good and really good :) , so other kids can get inspiration and guidance from you.

Best of luck, kid.

Maybe “enjoy” is a bit much, but I don’t mind it, especially since I’m almost done :P

I think I will do as you and Hilary have said. Thanks James!

Oh if I could only be 12 again and know what I know now. Congrats this is the big year for you and Business is an excellent thing to study, but than again you know I am biased.

Haha, I know what you mean. Many people seem to wish they had began things earlier. Then again, that’s life. You’re successful now, and that’s what matters.

No problem with being a bit biased. I can tell you’re quite the businessman, and it is fair to love what you do. I really like the idea of business — much more than being a doctor, or computer engineer. Sure those are great jobs, but you have to love what you do, right? Plus, Business is where you can hit it big these days!

Hey Gooroo, nice that in Canada you study by semesters. In Venezuela we study the whole year, so if you flunk then you miss the whole year. I hope you get the opportunity in any of these Universities. I like Duke :) . Good Luck!.

Yeah, I miss the Canadian system. Here in the USA, we have the same classes all year. It becomes really boring after a while.

Now that you mention Venezuela also works on the yearly system, it makes me think that Canada is probably one of the few countries that uses a semester system.

And thanks man! I really like Duke also — well, everything except the cost. :D

First, I thought you were at least a couple of years older than that; wow!

Second, I kind of know what you mean. I moved to this place at the beginning of my junior year. I was a military kid, but suddenly I was going to a school that had no use for “new kids”, and of course I was minority. And yet, oddly enough, I wasn’t sure I wanted to graduate. I also had enough credits to graduate early, but decided I wanted to stick out the year; I’m glad I did.

I wish you the best as you start this part of your journey. And, of course, I, and everyone else, will be keeping up with this blog to see how you’re progressing.

Haha, no worries — I get that all the time.

Dang. When I think I have it bad, I think about kids that have parents in the military. They seem to be constantly moving (every few years).

About graduating, I think I’ve decided to stick out the year as well. I’m going to make a pot about it soon. I think I’ll also be glad I did at the end.

Thanks Mitch. Means a lot! I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on the whole university process. I have to apply soon… :/ Scary thought.
